Check Out the New Chris Borton Memorial Scholarship Site

As mentioned before, both my brother and I benefited tremendously from studying abroad in college. I also knew Chris Borton in high school and studied a year after he did in Göttingen, Germany.

Chris’ passing prompted the formation of a memorial scholarship. For the 2019-2020 academic year, the amount of a scholarship is $8,000. The Chris Borton Memorial Scholarship is currently available to students at UCSD and UCD pursuing full year study abroad programs.

The CBMSF is inspirational for us at the Barbara Neu Memorial Scholarship given its cause, our connection with the Borton family (my mother and Verena especially), the significance of its contribution to students and the way it tells the stories of and establishes relationships with its recipients.

As Verena, Chris’ mother, notes:

“Keeping in touch with this ever larger group is a challenge, but the rewards are wonderful. The fact that we are interested in these young people long after they finished their year of study abroad resonates with some of them. It’s apparently a rare phenomenon in the scholarship world. For us they provide an extended family, thanks to Chris.”
